YMCA Adventure Guides: Frequently Asked Questions
Over
the years YMCA leaders acknowledge that members enter Adventure Guides with
similar questions.
What is YMCA Adventure Guides?
YMCA Adventure Guides is a father–child program designed to
help father–child pairs build strong, lasting relationships. They do
this by spending quality time together doing enjoyable activities that
promote communication.
Who is YMCA Adventure Guides for?
Fathers and their children ages 5 to 13+.
What happens when I join?
New members are placed into excursions,
which are smaller groups within the overall Cherokee Expedition.
Excursions are smaller groups of 7 to 20
father–child pairs who live in a certain area. Each excursion is
either a father-son group (also known as Explorers) or a father-daughter
group (also known as Adventurers). There are also Trail Mates,
Trail Blazers and Extreme Guides for older children (grades 4 through
9).
How much time will the program take?
Two to four hours a month. Excursions
typically meet once a month
for an hour at an event location or at members’ homes. The overall
Cherokee Expedition has group events approximately once every two months
during the school year. Rarely do two events occur in the same
month.
When do excursions meet?
All meeting dates and times are chosen by the individual
excursion
in order to accommodate all member’s schedules. Most excursions meet on a
weeknight around 7 o’clock or on Sunday afternoons.
What kinds of activities are involved?
Excursion meeting activities include games, songs, stories,
crafts, and refreshments. In addition, each excursion plans special
activities such as hiking, campouts, community service, cookouts, and
family outings.
Are there other activities involved?
Yes, including, Expedition adventures, for which all the
excursions get together, include fall/winter and spring campouts.
Activities include archery, canoeing, horseback riding, fishing,
swimming, hiking, pine wood derby racing, Father-Daughter dance night, and more.
